Living the High Life:
Pooches are Pampered at Paradise Luxury Pet
Estate by
Michelle Slayer, Images by Cathy Heinz

Dog lovers need not feel guilty about heading
out of town for summer vacation and leaving Fido
behind. Paradise Luxury Pet Estate provides such
a posh environment for dogs that “their people”
may just want to vacation there, too…
A far cry from a cage-lined kennel, Paradise
is a boarding, daycare and grooming facility — a
“country club for dogs,” said owner Holly
McConnell. Here, canine companions go outside
five to seven times a day, weather permitting,
to run and play with other dogs of the same
size, age and temperament in large partitioned
areas of shady 12-acre estate. Paradise’s
experienced dog handlers, who provide a tireless
arm for games of fetch and plenty of love and
attention while mom and dad are away, supervise
playtime. The property is fully fenced to
provide a safe and secure environment for each
beloved pet.
When it’s time to cool off indoors, the
pampered pups curl up on their choice of leather
sofa or individual sling bed in a comfortably
air-conditioned and tropically decorated room in
one of three brick homes on the property—the
Main House, the Gatehouse and the Courtyard pool
house. When they return from a romp outdoors,
they find their couches refreshed, floors
mopped, and fresh water in their bowls.
Separate accommodations are geared for “couch
potatoes” – older and less active dogs; puppies’
one year old and younger; large and active dogs;
medium sized dogs; and small dogs. “They go into
rooms according to personality and size, “said
McConnell. “We don’t put the puppies in with the
seniors.”
There’s even a room for special needs
dogs—those requiring medication, have mobility
issues or other medical problems that demand
close monitoring. Outdoor play yards are also
kept separate according to the dogs’ size and
activity level.
Why all the fuss over a family pet?
McConnell, who previously raised and showed
Golden Retrievers and owned a pet accessories
business, said she created a place where she
would want to send one of her own dogs. “I want
my dog to be somewhere where she’s free to roam
and be outside with people that are trained in
handling dogs and know dog behavior and dog
illnesses. I can’t put my dog in a cage.”
Although she has a degree in human
psychology, McConnell says she much prefers
studying dog behavior to that of people. “I love
dogs. They just say it the way it is. There’s no
guessing.”
Before pets can visit this Club Med for
canines, they must have proof of updated
Bordetella, distemper and rabies shots, must be
on a flea and tick preventative program and must
be spayed or neutered. Each new dog must also
visit for a “Trial Daycare” session and be able
pass the pass the “Ella” test. If they get along
with McConnell’s gentle, eight-year-old Golden
Retriever, Ella, they can become part of the
pack. Dogs who exhibit signs of aggression and
aggression-prone breeds such as pit bulls are
not accepted. “Our job is not to fix a dog that
needs to have some one-on-one training, our job
is to have them play and be socialized with
other dogs. They have to have fun here or
they’re not welcome.”
Nervous parents can rest at ease knowing that
there is a manager on site 24 hours a day, seven
days a week and surveillance cameras in every
room. A fire alarm in each house is wired
directly to the Palm Bay fire department.
Although city zoning does not allow McConnell to
have a veterinarian on site, she works with
several area vets as well as those of her
clients. If a dog becomes ill, she or a member
of her staff will drive the pet to its personal
vet.
Boarding isn’t the only service offered at
Paradise. Doggie daycare is offered Monday
through Saturday. The facility also provides
boarding for pets during hurricane evacuations.
The same health and behavior requirements apply
for daycare as for boarding.
For those looking to spend a little bonding
time with their dog, Paradise’s “Pond Parties”
are a virtual doggie Disneyworld. On Wednesdays
and Saturdays, owners of large dogs can bring
their pooch for an hour and a half of water play
in the estate’s two-acre, alligator-free
artesian pond. Tennis balls, ball throwers and
play sticks are included with admission, as is a
dog-washing area complete with fresh towels.
Daycare dogs or pets in the boarding program may
also participate in the Pond Party on Mondays.
Celebrating its fourth birthday this July,
Paradise Luxury Pet Estate has mainly grown
through the word of mouth of satisfied dog
owners. McConnell credits her simple business
philosophy with the key to her success: “If
people and dogs don’t come in to have a good
time, we won’t take them in.”

On first approach, the Paradise Luxury Pet Estate
looks exactly like what it is – a gated, expansive property devoted
solely to man’s best friend. The landscaping and housing are more
on par with a country club then a kennel. On closer inspection,
though, one notices that the entire property has been thoughtfully
laid out with a dog’s best interests in mind. Everything, from the
fields to the ponds to the rooms, has been set aside as part of the
package.
“When we first started Paradise, we wanted to create
a safe, loving and sensitive environment for dogs where people could
leave them knowing that they would be well-cared for and treated
with dignity and respect,” Holly McConnell, founder and owner of
Paradise Luxury Pet Estate, says. “The question we always asked
ourselves when making decisions about what to offer, how to set
things up, etc. was: ‘What would we want for Ella [our Golden
Retriever]?’”
McConnell and her husband founded Paradise Luxury Pet
Estate in July 2006. She had a background in the pet industry, and
had been showing Golden Retrievers for 10 years by the time Paradise
opened its doors. “That first year was rough,” McConnell remembers.
“We started out with our family’s help and only had two additional
employees. In fact, I didn’t even leave the property for the first
165 days – I had to put everything I had into building the
business.”
As a result of her dedication, McConnell, with the
help of her team, has created a place that specializes in
crate-free, cage-free boarding and daycare, and has such a good
reputation that it operates primarily on word-of-mouth referrals.
“Our grooming service, for example, is not advertised at all,”
McConnell provides. “Teri does a stellar job and all of the
referrals keep her busy.”
In addition to the grooming service, Paradise also
offers obedience training classes and “pond parties” – opportunities
for owners to play with their pets at ponds without worrying about
alligators or any of the other problems normally associated with
Florida waterways.
“Like I said before,” McConnell emphasizes, “This
whole thing is based around Ella. We don’t do anything that I
wouldn’t feel comfortable doing for my own dog.”
The business may be Ella-centric, but McConnell must
be doing something right.
Normal kennel staff turnover rates are around 85 percent,
at Paradise, it is 1 percent.
“All of my staff are required to read Cesar's Way: The Natural,
Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems
by Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, before they are allowed to
handle the dogs,” She provides. “They need to know how to be good
pack leaders first.”
In a business that caters to up to 60 dogs at any
given point in time, dog handling expertise is essential. As such,
the Paradise staff also attends routine training classes and
seminars, and tends to work within niches while on duty (large dogs,
small dogs, etc.).
“I have the best team and I know I could not do any
of it without them,” adds McConnell with a smile. It has taken her
three years to grow her business into what she wants it to be, but
McConnell is happy where she is right now, and is looking forward to
the future.
“Other businesses may look at expansion, but in 10
years, I do not think we could offer the same level of service if we
added on to the property or started a second location,” she says.
“Personally, I would like to have someone else managing the
day-to-day by then, so that I could focus solely on the obedience
training seminars, which are my favorite part of what I do right
now.”
She takes things day by day, though. “You have to!”
McConnell laughs. “Working with dogs is like working with small
children, you never know what is going to happen.”
Her daily mantra, “Adapt, Improvise, Overcome,”
remains true for any entrepreneur, and if followed, it might just
lead to what she has...Paradise.

Hi ~ We went with our daughter, Ashley, her
boyfriend, Manny, and their two dogs Bella and
Bear to your Halloween party for dogs on
Saturday. I wanted to let you know how
much we enjoyed it. There are so few
places we can take our beloved fur babies that
it's a joy to go to an event like yours where
the dogs can mingle, play and have a really good
time. In addition, Bella (long hair
Chihuahua) won for cutest costume - a witch!
So, that was a pleasant surprise! Ashley
and Manny have taken their 2 to your dog day
care and we were so impressed by what a nice
place you have. Thank you again for
opening up your place fur such a fun event!
Looking forward to the next fun time! ~ Brenda

Ask Ella
11/12/07: “Dear
Ella, So what did your mom do to our mom anyway? They all went to
Miami for the day yesterday to listen to some dude with a funny name
and when she came back home, she was acting all different. Not bad –
just different. We used to call most of the shots around here. Now
our mom thinks she gets to be our boss and tell us what to do and
when to do it – even where to walk when we are out with her. What’s
up with that? We think we are OK with the change – it makes us feel
strangely comfortable – but we will have to let you know in a couple
of weeks how all of this is going. Your friends, Gator and AJ”
Hi Guys, My mom got
home really late that night after the trip and still showered me
with hugs & kisses – I guess that means she had a great time…..or if
what you’re saying is true, it could be that she’s buttering me up
for something coming down the pipe……..uh oh. We have training class
here on Tuesday nights and I know Georgia the trainer was on the
trip too and so I’ll hang out in the training area behind the plants
and see if I can get in on the latest scoop! Later, Ella.

Hello! A big big thank you to Holly, Mark, Ann, and all who
helped arrange the trip yesterday.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and was so very thankful that I did not
have to drive, use a tank
of gas, find parking, buy the ticket, etc. The bus driver was
excellent and really
seemed to know what he was doing and the bus was clean, although I
didn't have to use the
rest room, so I don't know about that part. The seminar was so
good and I am anxious to
try some new techniques on Roxy and Annie. I hope Holly and crew
got out of the mess on
I-95 in Miami and got home before midnight! Anyway, thank you
again for that special treat. I really appreciate all of your
efforts. Judy

GREAT COSTUMES!!!
GREAT Fun!!!!
GREAT Memories!!

Holly,:

I just wanted
to make sure you know how much I appreciate you and your team for
expending the effort to
organize the BARKtoberfest. It was a lot of fun to see the owners
take such
pride in their
dogs showing them off in their unique and cute costumes.
Please extend
a big THANK YOU to your team for me. I can only assume some of them
gave
up their
Saturday for us. It takes a lot of planning and coordination to make
the day seem so
simple. I know
that it not true as I have been on committees in the past planning
different parties
including
several Halloween Parties.
Everyone was a
winner on Saturday because they got snacks, drinks, and were
eligible for door
prizes even if
they didn’t enter into any of the contests.
Again, thanks
so much for your efforts on Saturday. I appreciate Paradise Pet
Estate for being
there for me
whenever I need to leave Diamond in your guardianship. Diamond can’t
wait to
get out of the
car every time we drive up to the Pet Estate. It makes me feel good
when I leave
her with you.
With much
appreciation,
Marsha

“5 Minutes Away” Notice For Gatehouse (large) Daycare
Dogs
Paul, the Gatehouse
Manager, has asked those of you bringing large dogs for
daycare to please keep our phone number handy and give us a call
when you are at least 5 minutes out. It’s helpful for him to be
able to prepare to walk away from what he’s doing, or perhaps
organize his activity so he & his staff can plan to welcome your pet
to Paradise daycare.
Also, when you come
to pick up your pet from daycare, all the dogs out in the field
playing when you arrive get so excited that it if Paul knows you’re
getting near, it gives him a little time to move them to the other
end of the field and bring your pet to you at the gate. Please try
to call BEFORE you get to Chandler Rd! Thanks!!
Bordatella Update Recommendation
After recent
conversations with local vets, we are recommending that all
dogs receive a Bordatella vaccine every 6 months instead of
yearly. Apparently the vaccine starts to lose its potency after 6
months and although there continues to be vaccine in the dog’s
system, it weakens substantially and ultimately affects the rest of
the dog’s immune system as it loses its effectiveness. Paradise
will continue to require the vaccine be updated annually as
per the boarding guidelines set by the state of Florida.
Pre-pay
For Speedier Pick-up
Some of you
would like to just drive in and pick up your pet and go, and that’s
certainly an option if you have pre-paid for your pet’s stay with us
(both daycare and boarding services). If you are pre-paid, you just
need to call us when you are 5-10 minutes away and we will do our
best to have your pet waiting for you when you arrive. We accept
cash, check, Visa & Mastercard.
Open House Twice a Year
Open House at
Paradise is held twice a year to allow the large
dog owners a chance to see where their pets go when they drop them
off. All houses at Paradise will be open for the Open House, but
this is the only time the Gatehouse is open due to the fact that
unscheduled, sporadic visitations are disruptive to the large dogs’
schedule and confusing to the dogs. We work very hard to have happy
dogs!
Paradise
Rewards Program
You can earn
credits toward your next daycare or boarding reservation. Once
you’ve referred a new client and they’ve completed a daycare or
boarding reservation, you will receive a $10.00 credit toward your
pet’s next spa day, daycare or boarding stay (pond parties are
excluded). Our Paradise Reward credits are non-transferable and
have no cash value. Just be sure that your referral person gives us
your name and we’ll make sure your pup gets the credit!
State-of-the-Art Security System
Even though Mark &
Holly live on the property and are here all the time, we have
upgraded the security system to include state-of-the art cameras in
every room of both the large & small doghouses, a brand new
computer, and 24/7 monitoring by Alarm Monitoring USA.
New Policy For “Crating a Dog Upon Request”
Our number one
selling point is that we have a Cage-less and Crate-less
environment. However, we have received a number of requests from
past and present clients asking us to crate their dogs at night
because it's what they're used to, and it contributes to their peace
of mind. Therefore, if an owner now requests that their pet be
crated for the night, it will be considered a "Special Needs"
request and the additional charge of $5 per night will be added to
the normal rate. Owners may also bring the pet's bedding, toys,
blanket, etc. to be given to the pet for overnight.
What to Expect After Boarding Your Dog
Thirsty Kids:
Just a reminder to our new moms & dads that it is perfectly
normal for your pet(s) to get back to their own home after boarding
or daycare at Paradise and drink water as if they hadn’t had a
drink since they left home! The drinking behavior is only from
excitement, and we want to assure you that their water here is
checked and refreshed every hour and a half when they’re inside
their playrooms. Plus, there is also water always available
when they’re outside to play!!
We recommend waiting at least 1/2 hour after returning
home to offer large
amounts of food or water. This will give them time to calm down.
Sleep:
After the excitement of being away, it’s normal for your dog
to sleep more than usual for the first few days after returning
home.
“Cause
For Paws” Cartridge Recycling Program
Paradise is the
only designated drop-off location in the Palm Bay area for used
inkjet printer cartridges to benefit the “Cause for Paws” program of
the Central Brevard Humane Society. If your business has a lot of
cartridges and would like to donate them, please call 1-800-804-7612
and they will come and pick them up.
Clearing Out Your Closets?
If you’re cleaning
out your closets and find some extra sheets, blankets and large
(fluffy) towels that are last season’s colors, and you’re thinking
of buying new colors for this year, we’d welcome your castoffs here
at Paradise!!
Early Pick-ups and Late Arrivals Fee
We love to let
the big dogs run free in our pole barn field, and the safest time to
do this is when we’ve locked the front gate and have all staff on
duty. Especially on Saturday & Sunday we try to plan our staffing
and dog walks around the times that the gate is locked and we’re
closed to the public.
When there’s a
late drop-off, early drop-off, or late pick-up, our schedule goes
awry and it causes a disruption in the dogs’ schedule. Because we
want all of the walks completed and individual care to not be
compromised, we have to have the employees come in early or stay
late to make up for the extra time needed due to early or late
drop-offs and/or late pick-ups.
We have decided
to implement an “outside the hours fee” to help pay for this extra
time. Effective immediately, there will be a charge of
$10
per dog for the first 15 minutes that your arrival is delayed.
An additional $10 per dog will be charged for each 20-minute
increment after that. Our hours that we are open to the public
continue to be:
Monday -
Friday: 7am to 6:30 pm.
Saturday:
7am to 10am. and 3pm to 5 pm
Sunday:
3pm - 5 pm only.
An “outside the
hours fee” will only incur if your pet is not dropped off or picked
up during these posted times.
Leather Furniture Always Needed
Please continue to
call us if you know of anyone getting rid of a leather couch or
chair in good condition or if you see one dropped by the side of the
road and it looks to be in good condition. Your pets thank you!!!
Cameras Installed in Dog Sleeping Rooms
Many of you noticed
& wondered about the long trench recently dug across the property.
Electrical cable has been laid through the trench to enable us to
install monitoring cameras in all of the dog play & sleeping rooms
in the main house, the pool house & the “islands” gatehouse
(formerly known as the large dog house).
Flea & Tick Info
Our belief is that
knowledge is power; therefore, we'd like to refer you to a few of
the websites that we trust and have learned a great deal from
regarding flea and tick control, prevention and treatment.
WWW.Drsfostersmith.com has a question and answer department as
well as an overview of the different flea and tick treatments and
preventatives. Remember, prevention is the key!
WWW.k9advantix.com has a webpage dedicated just to ticks and
another one dedicated to fleas. The best part of K9advantix is it
remains effective after repeated swimming and bathing. Please note
though, K9advantix is TOXIC to cats and should not be used anywhere
near them.
WWW.frontline.us.merial.com focuses on the flea and tick life
cycle and how the topical solutions interrupt the multiplying
process.
WWW.ah.novartis.com is a website that focuses on the monthly
pill Sentinel. Sentinel is used for the prevention and control of
flea populations and the prevention of heartworm. It also controls
roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms in dogs. Sentinel has to be
prescribed by your veterinarian since a yearly heartworm test is
required before continuing on a heartworm preventative.
WWW.peteducation.com has a webpage that breaks down each flea
and tick control product that's currently available. There's a
chart which illustrates the active ingredient in each product as
well as the dosage and administration, the effects, and any comments
regarding the product
The Dog
Days of Summer Are Here
We all know that
it’s a bad idea to leave our pets in the car with the windows
cracked “just for a minute,” but just how bad is it? A dog’s
normal body temp ranges from 101-102.5 degrees and they can tolerate
a body temp of 107-108 degrees for a very short period of time
before suffering brain damage or heat stroke. On a typical
Florida summer day when the temp outside is 95 degrees and all 4
windows are “cracked,” the inside temp of your car is a whopping 113
degrees! Please leave them home when you have errands to run; or
better yet, bring them to Paradise for a play day!
Paradise Earns Excellent
Grade on Inspection
Wagging tails to our team who work very hard
to maintain a level of cleanliness and sanitation that will ensure
that Paradise will be a clean and healthy facility for our guests.
The Health Dept. arrived for a surprise inspection on July 3 - a day
that we were fully-booked for July 4th - and after visiting our
rooms, kitchens and grounds, they found nothing to write on their
report, but we saw lots of smiles. In a business that deals
with a lot of "stuff" (dare we say recycled milk bones), we were
VERY proud of our team!
